Back to winning
After a rough week at home against the Indians and White Sox, the Mariners took to the road and won four out of six games against the Tigers and Blue Jays.
There were some runs scored finally, a Felix Hernandez gem, and some late inning heroics by Michael Saunders, all in all a very good bounce back week by your Mariners.
So without any fanfare, I give you my Seattle Mariners top ten!
10. Road sweet road
After going a dismal one out of six at home the previous week, the M’s welcomed the sight of Comerica park, a place where they have owned the Detroit Tigers in the past few seasons.
9. Did somebody order Broom Service?
Speaking of owning the Detroit Tigers at Comerica, the M’s pulled off a three game sweep in Detroit, their first of the year.
8. Felix gets some runs finally
Felix Hernandez took the mound in Detroit, knowing all too well that he would have to have his A game. Lately it seems the offense takes the night off whenever Felix pitches, even more than on regular nights.
Felix got the run support that totaled his last 25 starts! OK, just kidding about that, but it was nice to see the team put up some numbers on a Felix start for once.
7. See, the M’s do have some offense
The M’s scored 32 runs this week, including 9 twice, against both the Tigers and Blue Jays! Scoring runs on the road is always important, and this comes a week after they could only manage 20 at home.
6. Introducing Hector Noesi; the go to pinch runner
Though he didn’t actually get to run, Mariners skipper Eric Wedge did have Noesi go get his spikes in case he was needed in the extra innings game Friday in Toronto.
5. M’s almost got Figgie wit it
Ever since the days of watching Ricky Henderson play, I’ve always been enamored with a lead off guy with some pop to his bat.
Chone Figgins displayed some of that in Toronto with a lead off blast. Too bad the M’s couldn’t hold the lead though.
4. The injury bug has returned
Even though the M’s were getting ready to welcome back Mike Carp, which should be a huge help to the lineup, they lost George Sherrill for the season.
Sherrill will undergo season ending Tommy John surgery within the next month. This is one of the worst injuries a pitcher can face, and requires more than a year to return from most of the time.
3. Old friend doesn’t play nice
Oh, Brandon Morrow. What I wouldn’t give to have you back in good guy blue again. Morrow blanked the M’s Saturday, stopping the Blue Jays losing streak, and starting another one for us.
2. Saunders perfects his home run trot
With not one, but two home runs on Friday night, Saunders single handily took down the Blue Jays, including the knock out punch grand slam in the 10th.
1. Oh, Canada
Though Canada was the worst part of the road trip last week, it still brings me pleasure any time I am allowed to sing the Canadian national anthem. It is not looked highly upon down here in Arizona.
So there it is folks, another week in the books, and a somewhat successful week for the Mariners.
Hopefully this will continue in the next few weeks.
I’m getting used to looking down on the Angels!
